Just recently the FCC hired an out and out idiot to be an adviser for them (whatever that means). [http://www.latimes.com/business/custom/cotown/la-fi-porn9aug09,1,330346.story?coll=la-headlines-business-enter] This idiot, whose name is Penny Nance, is typical of right-wing Christians in wanting the entire country to have "Biblical" values--regardless of what others want or view as right.
I've had people tell me, "Who cares? There's real problems in the US. Why worry about television/radio?" To them I say, be careful. First it's the free-flow of ideas the government wants to control (media), then it's the access to means of defending ourselves (gun-control), and finally it's our ability to protest (media again). After that it all goes to hell. Anytime we allow a governmental body the ability to control what is said in public, whether its in books, television, films, radio, internet, etc.,etc., we allow them to control our public discourse. Since, in a democracy, we're not always going to be happy with the people in power, we shouldn't allow anyone in power to have that control over us.
One other point I'd like to make is this: why do "conservatives" who supposedly want less government, never have a problem with censorship and/or telling people what they can watch or read? But also, why do "liberals" who want the government involved in so much of our lives, complain when that same government shows the stupidity of allowing the government too much power in the first place?
Just a thought.

Look, let's get one thing straight; I DO care what goes on in the media. By that I mean, do I believe there should be nudity and obscenity during daytime hours? Uh, no. But then... who am I to judge? Just a mother of two. I know damned well if my kids don't see it at home, they'll probably see it somewhere else. I KNOW that. But I still feel I have a right to say I believe blatant obscenity is in poor taste.
That said, I applaud anyone who stands up to our AMERICAN right to free access to any and all free speech. The public should decide. The FCC is that old grandmother we publicly agree with, and privately laugh at.
